Best Ways to Stay Cool for Less This Summer

It's
due to get hot. Again. And just like last time, and the time before that, the entire country will collectively lose its mind over temperatures that Mediterranean Europe would describe as "a mild Tuesday."

We don't have air con. We’re British.

Here's how to stay cool this summer without spending a fortune.

1. Fan Plus Bowl of Ice

No air con?
Here's your DIY version.

Place a bowl of ice in front of a fan. As the air passes over it, you get an evaporative cooling effect that takes the temperature down a notch. It's not quite a split-system air conditioner but it costs about 16p to run and doesn't require a landlord's permission.

The Daewoo ice maker produces up to 12kg of ice a day, with fresh ice ready in as little as 6 minutes.

Ice. Fan. Cool air. Amen.

2. Have a Hot Drink

Stick with us on this one.

Drinking something hot triggers your body to sweat more. When that sweat evaporates, it takes heat with it, meaning a hot drink can actually leave you cooler overall than a cold one.

The Denver kettle boils one to two cups in under a minute, holds 1.5L, and comes in a sky blue to remind you of icy winter days - RIP.

Sometimes the most British solution is also the right one.

3. Let the Robot Do the Hoovering

Moving around generates body heat. Hoovering on a hot day, or any day, is genuinely one of the most horrific things you can do to yourself.

This summer it’s all about self-love, so let the robot handle it.

Set it off, sit down, stay cool. The house still gets clean and you haven't worked up a sweat doing chores at 2pm in August. That's not laziness. That's thermal management.

4. Hydrate Properly

Water throughout the day, not just when
you're thirsty. If you're sweating heavily, a pinch of salt or a rehydration drink helps replace lost electrolytes. Cut back on caffeine and alcohol during peak heat - both dehydrate you faster than you'd think, gutting we know.

Drink more. Move less. Close the curtains.

You'll be fine.

Stay Cool. Spend Less.

British summers are getting hotter and our houses still aren't built for it. But you don't need to spend a fortune to cope.

A few simple habit changes, a bowl of ice, a hot brew and a robot vacuum doing the heavy lifting goes a long way.
