Enter the Daewoo 6.5L Slow Cooker. With room for up to six portions, three heat settings and a dishwasher-safe pot, it's made for chucking everything in and getting on with your day.
Sausage & Bean Casserole
The one that tastes like you've made an effort. You haven't.
Ingredients
- 8 pork sausages
- 2 tins of baked beans (400g each)
- 1 tin chopped tomatoes (400g)
- 1 onion, chopped
- 2 carrots, sliced
- 1 tbsp tomato purée
- 1 tsp smoked paprika
- 1 tsp dried mixed herbs
Instructions
- Brown the sausages in a frying pan, then add them to the slow cooker.
- Chuck in everything else and give it a stir.
- Cook on low for 6–7 hours, until the sausages are cooked through and the vegetables are tender.
- Serve with mash, crusty bread or whatever's available for mopping up the sauce.
Budget hack: Use supermarket own-brand sausages and beans. Nobody's conducting a blind taste test.
Creamy Chicken & Leek Stew
Proper comfort food. Without the proper effort.
Ingredients
- 600g boneless chicken thighs
- 2 leeks, sliced and washed
- 3 carrots, chopped
- 500g potatoes, chopped into small chunks
- 400ml chicken stock
- 1 tsp dried thyme
- 100g soft cheese
- 1 tbsp cornflour, mixed with 2 tbsp cold water
Instructions
- Add the chicken, leeks, carrots, potatoes, stock and thyme to the slow cooker.
- Cook on low for 5–6 hours, until the chicken is thoroughly cooked and the vegetables are tender.
- Shred the chicken, then stir in the soft cheese and cornflour mixture.
- Turn to high for another 15–20 minutes until creamy and thickened.
Budget hack: Chicken thighs are often cheaper than breasts and stay lovely and tender in the slow cooker. You're welcome.
Smoky Sweet Potato & Bean Chilli
Meat-free. Cheap. And absolutely not a sad bowl of vegetables.
Ingredients
- 2 medium sweet potatoes, peeled and diced
- 2 tins kidney beans (400g each), drained
- 1 tin chopped tomatoes (400g)
- 1 onion, chopped
- 1 pepper, chopped
- 200ml vegetable stock
- 2 tsp smoked paprika
- 1 tsp ground cumin
- 1 tsp chilli powder
Instructions
- Chuck everything into the slow cooker.
- Give it a good stir and cook on low for 6–7 hours, until the sweet potatoes are soft.
- Give some of the beans and sweet potato a quick mash against the side of the pot if you'd like it thicker.
- Serve over rice, in wraps or with a generous handful of grated cheese.
Budget hack: Make extra and freeze individual portions. Future you, arriving home cold and hungry on a Tuesday, will be absolutely delighted.
